What Is NIST?What Is NIST?

What Is NIST?

NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) is a physical sciences laboratory. NIST's mission is to promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology in ways that enhance economic security and improve the quality of life for U.S citizens.

Time and frequency, temperature, mass, length, and electricity are among the measurement and testing standards developed and maintained by NIST. Research and development are also conducted in areas such as cyber security, artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, and quantum information.

What Is NIST Compliance?

Compliance with NIST refers to ensuring that an organization adheres to NIST security standards and guidelines. Compliance with NIST is particularly important for organizations that handle sensitive data, such as government agencies, financial institutions, healthcare providers, and technology companies. These organizations can follow NIST's best practices and guidelines to protect their data and information systems’ confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

In order to manage and reduce cybersecurity risks, NIST developed the Cybersecurity Framework (CSF). There are five core functions of this framework, namely: Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond, and Recover. For each function, organizations are provided with specific recommendations for improving their cybersecurity posture based on categories and subcategories.

Achieving NIST compliance involves assessing an organization's current security posture, identifying areas for improvement, and implementing the necessary controls and measures. As security risks and threats change, NIST compliance is a continuous process that involves ongoing improvements, monitoring, and adjustments.

Who Needs To Meet Compliance With NIST?

NIST compliance is not a requirement for every organization. It is however highly recommended for organizations that handle sensitive data, like government agencies, banks, healthcare providers, and technology firms.

The Federal Information Security Modernization Act (FISMA) and other regulations mandate that government agencies follow NIST guidelines for cybersecurity. Among these are federal, state, and local government agencies, as well as contractors that work on behalf of these agencies.

It is voluntary for private sector organizations to comply with NIST requirements, but it is becoming increasingly necessary for organizations to do business with government agencies or maintain relationships with partners who handle sensitive data on a regular basis. Generally speaking, any company that wants to make sure that their data and information systems are confidential, secure, and available will benefit from adopting the NIST guidelines on cybersecurity.

Log Management For NIST

It is important to manage logs in order to comply with NIST standards. In accordance with NIST guidelines, organizations are required to implement a comprehensive log management program that includes the following components:

  • Collect logs from all systems, applications, and devices that contain sensitive data or support critical business functions is a critical part of managing log files.
  • Review and analyze logs as part of the security process to ensure that no security incidents, attempts to gain unauthorized access, or policy violations occur.
  • There is also a requirement to retain logs and archive them for an appropriate period of time in order to comply with legal and regulatory requirements and to support the investigation of incidents that occur.

NIST guidelines also recommend that organizations establish policies and procedures for log management that cover all relevant systems, applications, and devices in order to comply with the guidelines. It is also critical that they implement appropriate technical controls, such as log analysis tools, and security information and event management (SIEM) systems in order to automate the process of managing logs.
